When I moved to Germany for the first time, it was a language shock. The German I learned at school did not prepare me at all for living abroad. Life in Munich and Berlin taught me that if I can not speak German fluently, I am not able to get anything done at the office, at the doctor, or at work. I took language courses, but I spoke very little. I could not respond quickly because I had not practiced grammar, theory alone is not enough.

I did not have a system; it took years before I could work for companies and banks in Germany. 

Then came stays in Austria and German sounded different again. Other expressions, articles, word order, pronunciation. In Austria, I worked for two companies, and even professional German is different in every field.
